Regarding tourist vs. private visas--I am contemplating travelling to Ukraine in 2001 to visit a friend. I do not plan to stay with that friend but rather at a hotel. Can I use a "private" visa or do I need a "tourist" visa?? Thanks for the help. Also in the US is it better to apply for a visa through the consulate or through a travel agency??

I would probably go for the tourist visa through a travel agency, preferably glads out of new york. I f you get a private visa you will have too go through hell trying to register and will spend your whole vacation doing it. I recommend a tourist because you do not have to do anything. I would suggest staying with your frind and if they give you an problems at customs, just pay the small fine for not having registered. Most of the time if you show up at the airport a litle late they will give you no problems.
