On July 13 the Pyramid Management Group, owners of the Ingleside Mall in Holyoke, Massachusetts issued a statement that, effective Sept. 9, 2005, the mall will bar those under 18 if they are not accompanied by an adult over 21 on Friday and Saturday between 4 p.m. and closing time.

According to 2000 Census Bureau statistics, in Holyoke, the poorest city in Massachusetts, Latin@s are over 50 percent of the population and those under 18 make up 30 percent of the total population. In Syracuse and Buffalo malls, where similar policies are in place, statistics are similar, although with a higher Black population (www.census.gov).

These cities include Hadley, Massachusetts where whites make up 96 percent of the population; Pittsfield, Massachusetts, 92 percent white; and Plymouth where the Independence Mall caters to tourists going to Plymouth, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, is 93 percent white. The poverty rates in these cities are all at or below 11 percent.

On August 1, Mountain Development Corporation followed Pyramid’s lead by issuing a similar policy but one that bars unescorted teens under 15 after 5 p.m. every day at its Eastfield Mall near Springfield, Massachusetts and only a few miles from Holyoke. Springfield is 20 percent Black and 27 percent Latin@ and has a 23 percent federal poverty level (www.census.gov).

These new policies, the first in Massachusetts, began in 1996 at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota near Minneapolis. They are increasing across the country and are standard policy at many of the 1,100 malls in the U.S., claims the International Council of Shopping Centers.

I Have Decided To Outlaw Al Jazeera Forever. Bombing Will Begin In Five Minutes.

One of the things that's so enjoyable about Our Fearless Leader is the way his neo-patrician l'etat c'est moi complete disregard for any and all rules, commandments or commitments that keep him from getting what he wants right this minute shines through every non-scripted moment of his life.

The White House emphatically denied a report by a British tabloid Tuesday that U.S. President George W. Bush considered bombing the headquarters of the al-Jazeera satellite television station in Qatar during the U.S. Marine assault on Falluja in April 2004.

But al-Jazeera, joined by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), called on the British government to publicly release the purported "top-secret" document on which the Daily Mirror report was based in order to determine its veracity and context.

"We have a newspaper that is reporting very serious charges and saying that there are minutes to this meeting in which this was said," said Joel Campagna, CPJ's Middle East expert, who has long followed the tumultuous relationship between the Bush administration and the Arab world's most popular broadcaster. "The quickest way to find out is to release these documents."

The Mirror itself quoted two unnamed sources about the White House meeting, both of whom appear to have agreed that the possibility of bombing al-Jazeera's headquarters was indeed discussed. One was quoted as saying that the threat was "humorous, not serious", but the other insisted that "Bush was deadly serious, as was Blair."

Unfortunately, no-one told the british government, which is prosecuting the man who broke the story under the Official Secrets Act for making a damaging disclosure of classified information. Now, to me (and goodness knows I by definition don't understand complicated intelligence matters with anything like the sophistication of all those folks who supported the war) the fact that they're prosecuting this guy doesn't sound as if the meeting didn't happen. It sounds as if the meeting happened and Tony Blair would very much prefer to pretend that he's hitched his wagon to a stallion, not an ill-tempered jackass.

Hi! WOOOOOOW!!! Congratulations on being featured with this terrific image collection!!! A well deserved honour for you!!! I love the way you've captured these outstanding photographs of the various lighthouses!!! Each and every picture is singular and the colours breathtaking!!! Very atmospherically!!! Thank you very much for sharing your amazing work!!! Greetings and God bless you from Switzerland, Erik

Congrats on your feature. Sorry I missed it the day it was posted but I was away on a trip, part of which was to photograph lighthouses. I have quite a collection myself and if you wait a day or two to check it you'll find 6 new ones added to my collection. Again, congrats and thanks for sharing these great shots. Garry

I think the thing I like the most about this album is the variety of the shots. They are all so different - which makes them all interesting and fun to look at. I particularly enjoyed the "Marshall Light House". The one with the walkway leading up to the door. That was a great use of converging lines to bring attention to the main part of the photograph. Your colors are vivid and eye catching. Plus, since I live in the midwest where we see a lot more corn fields than lighthouses, they all appealed to the salt water flowing in my veins. Thanks for sharing! Connie from Ohio

A friend suggested this album and I came to have a look. An impressive collection! I never knew lighthouses come in such a variety of shapes!!! I favor the views with lighthouses like in Nos.1/2/8/21/41/45/48/50/ 57/66/68/70. It is a tribute to the ligthts and the people who man and mantain them.Quite a trip through the slideshow! Greetings from Japan, Gabriela

I sure enjoyed your lighthouse album! You have a wonderful assortment of lights from many different ports and islands. Your photography is excellent and I wonder where you were to get such great shots on some of them. :) I 'shoot' lighthouses too and the fun of finding them is right up there with 'shooting' them. Your album is beautiful! - Miss DeeAnne (from Western Michigan)

FWIW, Joe's pretty much right in the quoted statement. The majority of Iraqis are Shiites who are looking forward to elections as legitimizing their majority control after decades of Sunni dominance/tyrany. The Kurds have concerns about autonomy, but they're ready to vote, too.

Here and other "progressive boards" for years since 2000. I've been savaged for saying it, but I think a lot of it has it do with the fact that he is pro-Israel and that he is a religious Jew. People get offended when I say that, but I think it is one of the reasons people don't like him.

I've heard people refer to him as "Senator Lieberman (R-Israel); that Lieberman "should run for mayor of Jerusalem"; "Senator Lieberman (R-Likud); "Holy Joe"; and other names. I know that it is not the main reason, but there are some on these blogs who dislike him because he supports Israel. And since Lieberman also supported the war he gets a lot of flack.

That being said he is miles away from being from Zell Miller. His record on domestic policy and civil rights is in line with most other Senate Democrats. I've posted his record from Project Vote Smart before. He is more moderate than Barbara Boxer and Ted Kennedy, but he is above Ben Nelson. He is probably in between them both.

My concern here is that this and other "progressive blogs" will obses over getting rid of Lieberman to the point of ignoring races against incumbents like Rick Santorum, George Allen, Bill First (open seat), and Conrad Burns. And I am really afraid that a nasty primary challenge will lead to the election of Nancy Johnson, Chris Shays, or Tim Sullivan to the US Senate, giving the GOP a free Senate seat because the far left wing of the party "had to send a message".

Even though Artur Anderson and Enron,Two of Joes favorite customers, are no longer in business  Pfizer,General Dynamics or many on K street would love to have one of their former marks working in their offices.Lets get this done before Joe decides to team up with McCain and have Regime change of another country written into Law as the official policy of the United States.

Pay attntion to what Joe DOES.  Gingrich and Mona Charen (GOPac seminar via C-Span) publicly thanked him for the work he did in Miami in the last days of the cmapaign. They openly said they and the party benefitted from his work on the behalf of BUSH.

Or you can slam people for being "anti semitic" in your narrow limited perception.  But railing against Maxine Waters (one of your very few paragraphs and you repeat it adnauseum) then leaves you open for narrow assessmetns as well.  I suggest we move to calling you out on that one.  I doubt you will like it and I doubt it will be accurate.  But why bother with reality.

Its the attacking Dems part. Give me a so called "centrist" or "moderate" who favors the death penalty, gun rights, even some abortion restriction, like a partial birth abortion ban, but as long as they are partisan on pressing issues like Iraq and and SS. A group of senators from both parties(Lincoln Chafee, Feinstein, John Warner) who visited Iraq have said it's gotten worse from a year ago when they last visited. Chafee recalled that on take-off out of Baghdad the pilot had to do some special maneuver that scared the shit of him. The list of candidates for the elections arent even being released to make sure none of them are blown up. 700 poll workers left a polling station in fear. How the hell do you have a legitimate election when you dotn have workers and dont even know who the candidates are who you are voting for. At least admit, it's a sham election, Joementum.  Joe needs to go IMO.

The repuke party in CT is the weakest it's been in 30 yrs in this state and all three house repubs let it be known if Lieberman got homeland security they didn't want the senate appointment because they new hey couldn't hold it.We're going to primary Joe because he doesn't represnt the views of most CT dems just like our stste Constitution says we should.

But in the last year he became delusional.  He didn't stand up against the Republicans, and seems to think the invasion of Iraq was a positive event.  Remember "Joe-mentum"?  That has become the vernacular for "sinking faster than the speed of light".

I didn't know he was Jewish, but I suppose I could have figured it out from the name if I cared about such stuff.  My problem with him is that he was so desperate to avoid antagonizing the Rush Limbaugh faction that he might as well have become one of them.

Lieberman fits in what was once the Scoop Jackson/Jack Kennedy wing of the party. While times have changed and that wing is smaller, I don't see the party doing very well by driving those voters out. Perhaps another candidate could hold Lieberman's Senate seat for the Democrats, but there'd still Democratic voters elsewhere alienated by the effort to purge Lieberman. What people are advocating here is the opposite of the Big Tent approach, and not a good strategy for a national party.

Paragraphs 4 And 5

0 Comments Published by Richy on 20.10.2006 at 15:33.
Okay, now I've got myself into a full-blown obsess, and I'll never get around to billing hours this weekend. But I'd like to take a close look at Paragraphs 4 and 5 of the indictment (PDF). Because they are clues in those paragraphs which suggest some interesting things. Take a look at these paragraphs:

4. On or about May 29, 2003, in the White House, LIBBY asked an Under Secretary of State (“Under Secretary”) for information concerning the unnamed ambassador’s travel to Niger to investigate claims about Iraqi efforts to acquire uranium yellowcake. The Under Secretary thereafter directed the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research to prepare a report concerning the ambassador and his trip. The Under Secretary provided LIBBY with interim oral reports in late May and early June 2003, and advised LIBBY that Wilson was the former ambassador who took the trip.

5. On or about June 9, 2003, a number of classified documents from theCIA were faxed to the Office of the Vice President to the personalattention of LIBBY and another person in the Office of the VicePresident. The faxed documents, which were marked as classified, discussed, among other things, Wilson and his trip to Niger, but didnot mention Wilson by name. After receiving these documents, LIBBY andone or more other persons in the Office of the Vice President handwrotethe names “Wilson” and “Joe Wilson” on the documents.

There are a couple of interesting things about these paragraphs. First, consider the scenario it suggests. Kristof's article appears on May 6. And then, 23 days later, Libby started trying to figure out who was behind the column. Now, I think I was wrong and Armando right the other day in our spat over whether the Get Wilson campaign was a direct response to Kristof's column. At least as portrayed in the indictment, the campaign started in May and not--as Wilson has suggested--in March.

Then there's another weird thing. If the scenario spelled out here is complete (I don't really believe it is--I believe Libby started collecting information before May 29), it would suggest Libby asked for information from State before he asked for information from the CIA. And he asked for that information up to 11 days after he asked for information from State. Now maybe that's because Kristof's column portrayed Wilson's leaking as a response to State Department claims that they were fooled by the forgeries.

I'm told by a person involved in the Niger caper that more than a yearago the vice president's office asked for an investigation of theuranium deal, so a former U.S. ambassador to Africa was dispatched toNiger. In February 2002, according to someone present at the meetings, that envoy reported to the C.I.A. and State Department that theinformation was unequivocally wrong and that the documents had beenforged.

The envoy reported, for example, that a Niger minister whosesignature was on one of the documents had in fact been out of officefor more than a decade. In addition, the Niger mining program wasstructured so that the uranium diversion had been impossible. Theenvoy's debunking of the forgery was passed around the administrationand seemed to be accepted except that President Bush and the StateDepartment kept citing it anyway.

Kristof doesn't specify that Cheney's office asked CIA for an investigation of the Niger allegations, he says Wilson reported to both CIA and State, and then emphasizes State in the following paragraph. So if you were working solely from what you found in Kristof's column, you might believe State was the most obvious place to look for information.

But Libby wasn't. He is (sorry, I should say he was) a pretty central member of OVP, after all, which would make it easy for him to find out who OVP asked for more information. The scenarios that try to hide Dick's involvement in this even suggest Libby was the one who asked CIA for more information, so he may have been (probably was) intimately involved in the asking.

Maybe Libby had requested info from CIA before May 29 and was having trouble getting them to release the documents and it wasn't until June 9 that they responded to his much earlier request; this would have you believe that a very cowed George Tenet was resisting a request from the Vice President's Chief of Staff

The third possibility would suggest one of the central Administration assertions in this affair is a lie. They've been saying for years now that they never received a report on this trip. But if Libby already had--and knew he had--a report on the trip, then he wouldn't need to request a copy to make an initial investigation into Wilson's trip. But if Libby already had a report on Wilson's trip, the assertion OVP never got one is an out and out lie. Big surprise.

The fourth possibility (which doesn't necessarily preclude the third) is equally damning. It suggests someone at State--perhaps Bolton, for example--had reason to believe there was information at State that might be useful to Libby's ratfuck. That information would almost certainly be the INR analyst notes that identify Plame as a CIA employee and allege she was behind his trip. In fact, consider this little detail we learned recently:

Attached to the letter were the notes from the INR analyst who hadattended the session, but they were written well after the eventoccurred and contained mistakes about who was there and what was said, according to a former intelligence official who reviewed the documentin the summer of 2003.

Someone out there knows when these notes were written. Is it possible these notes were written between May 6 and May 29? I have wondered whether someone in Bolton's office got to the INR analyst who wrote those notes. It is much more likely someone in Bolton's office got to that analyst if they were written sometime during May 2003.

In any case, Grossman would be an unlikely person to ask for dirt on Wilson. I have no clear evidence they're allies. But they're both career diplomats. They're both UCSB graduates. And they worked together briefly in Turkey. So it is possible, certainly, that Grossman's relationship with Wilson is more than that of a colleague.

But if you wanted to get a document with a particularly damning (you believed) piece of information, but you wanted to obscure the source of that information, then you might launder it through someone like Marc Grossman. All you had to do was make sure the information was there, an obvious source he (or the INR at his request) would consult to respond to Libby's request for more information.

I've already mentioned that it's weird that Libby would request documents from State before he requested them from CIA. But eventually he got some from CIA as well. The faxed document appears to be CIA's report on Wilson's trip, since we know from the SSCI report that Wilson's CIA report doesn't mention Wilson by name.

Now this suggests several things. First, it suggests that two or more people knew Wilson was the envoy described in that report. Either they knew it already (from an earlier report, from discussions). Or Libby revealed Wilson's identity, which he may have learned earlier or he knew from Grossman's briefing, when he distributed the documents. In any case, the handwritten notations prove there was discussion among Libby and "one or more persons" about Wilson's trip. This is not that surprising; after all, we know there was a discussion about how to respond to Pincus' request for information on Wilson's trip before June 12. But it suggests that when they had those discussions, they were directly consulting a set of information they had already collected from the relevant agencies. In other words--it wasn't in response to journalists' inquiries that convinced them to collect this information. They had already done their homework to collect that information.

And one more tiny detail. I'm amused that Fitzgerald doesn't reveal how many people have shown their Wilson report--with their distinct hand-written notes on it--to him. I can just see Libby, wracked with paranoia, trying to figure out how many people have talked about that Get Wilson meeting. Is it just one other person, the other guy who named on that CIA fax? Is it two? Have five people shared this with Fitzgerald? How many, damnit!! How many???
