Travel State Gove Passport

Mike And Sheryl's Travel Journals

For the past couple of years I've used this site to document, via photos and words, our various travels. Sometimes I post articles in near real-time, and other times I post a set of related articles after the trip is over. In either case, once I've written all the entries for a given trip, I assemble them in correct chronological order (recall that blogs are posted in reverse chron order) which makes for a nice presentation of the journey.

I used to have links to these reports as part of the navigation for this blog. The recent redesign of the site indicated the chronicles of our journeys would be better served from their own index page. Not wanting to have to maintain a separate page outside the blog, I created this entry which will serve as an index to our travel postings.

This trip, taken about a year after I started blogging, marked the beginning of a new style of travel essay. Covering our road trip from San Jose, California to the Lindsborg, Kansas area, and back, I blogged most of this trip in close to real time, blogging nightly from our hotel while we were traveling, and from my brother's house once we got to Kansas. Images include The Arches National Monument and other attractions in Utah, as well as the chalk bluffs in western Kansas out by Oakley.

This trip was interesting in that we had a couple of days of vacation, 4 days attending a technical conference in Las Vegas, and a few more days vacation after that. Highlights include images of the natural hot springs, showing visible steam in the cool fall weather, plus a lot of good shots from around Vegas, including the Strip at night and others of the nearby desert.

Labour Claim Victory After Cameron Abandons Patient's Passport

"The left have spent too much time trying to get the private sector out of the NHS and the right have spent too much time trying to get people out of the NHS and into the private sector. Barbara Castle's attempt to abolish pay beds was an example of the first; Margaret Thatcher's support for giving tax relief on private medical insurance, and our Patients Passport policy at the last election, were examples of the second."

According to BBCi Mr Cameron promised to "defend the values of the NHS against those in his party who want a new system based on medical insurance."  Patricia Hewitt, Health Secretary, said Mr Cameron was in "headlong retreat": "David Cameron has had to abandon a policy that he himself was putting forward just six months ago," she said. LibDem health spokesman Steve Webb said that Mr Cameron was dumping old policies without putting anything new in their place.  Andrew Haldenby, of Reform, told the BBC that all the political parties should be more open minded about medical insurance.

The news that Stephen Dorrell MP and Baroness Perry have been appointed to Chair an 18-month commission on the public services confirms the idea that Major-era managerialism appears back in Tory fashion when it comes to the public services.  School choice has already been downgraded as a policy aim.  The Tory website now talks of public service improvement rather than reform.

Google Earth At Night

Many folks have seen images of the earth at night, showing the lights from cities and towns around the world. I think the first poster I saw in this vein was back in the early 80s. Graduate student Peter Pesti (blog) has taken the concept into the 21st century. Married with google map technologies, his vision of (google) earth at night is fun to explore. Having traveled by various routes on our trips to and from California, it was fascinating (but not surprising) just how well the city lights and highways were aligned, especially along smaller highways such as US 54 from Kansas to New Mexico.
