Even as airlines are cutting their commissions to travel agents, some hotels, rental car companies and cruise lines are raising them. These companies are hoping that agents scrambling to make up the income lost from selling airline tickets will steer more customers their way. Almost 100 hotels managed by Richfield Hotel Management Inc. in Denver, including a sprinkling of Hiltons, Sheratons, and Radissons, recently raised commission rates to 15 percent from 10 percent. The Hotel Reservations Network, a discount hotel booking service in Dallas that represents about 400 independent and chain hotels throughout the United States, doubled its commissions to as much as 10 percent.

Selling Cruises

To the Editor: I am sick and tired of travel agent bashing under the guise of helping readers obtain the best bargains. Betsy Wade's Practical Traveler column "Cruises: Do Travel Agents Steer Clients Straight?" (June 7) is a good example. I challenge anyone to sit in a travel agent's chair for just one day. Few work so hard, care so much, face such contradictions, confusion and variations while making so little money. Sure, there are some bad eggs out there, as there are bad doctors, teachers and painters. Would you seek health advice from the cheapest doctor, or use the cheapest house painter? Not every traveler benefits from the cheapest cruise, air fare or tour. The savvy traveler chooses a good agent to work with in planning the best vacation, with the least hassle, at the best value.

When my husband and I were considering going to WDW for our anniversary, we happened to visit a Disney store in a mall. The manager gushed about WDW (doesn't everybody, really?) and showed us the Birnbaum's 2006 guide for kids. I thought we'd buy it, just to get an idea of what was in the parks and such.
This particular guide features 160 glossy pages describing all the attractions and shows in the four WDW parks. Peppered throughout the book are mini-reviews and tips by kids. There is also a rating system that shows if a ride is scary, loud, rough, wet, or dark (or all of the above!).
However, I didn't find the guide accurate in terms of my own son. (He's 7 and wanted to experience EVERYTHING--even Expedition Everest, Tower of Terror, and Space Mountain!) But at least the guide tells you of those elements in case a child is skittish about darkness and such. Still, some of the shows were considered "dark" and "scary" (for example, The Voyage of the Little Mermaid), when I felt they were whimsical and very non-threatening. The book gives Soarin' a mere "dark" rating, but I'm tellin' ya, if you're scared of heights, it can be SCARY. I was shaking so bad when I got off Soarin', I couldn't unbuckle the seatbelt! (My husband had to get me out.) It was thrilling and unique, but I'd think some kids would be terrified!
Kids will enjoy pouring over the colorful illustrations and photographs in anticipation for the big trip. There's even mazes, quizzes, and other games all throughout the Birnbaum guide for kids. There's lots of trivia in the book, too, as well as Hidden Mickey Alerts. (I wish I would have written some down to look for them on the trip! Maybe next time.)
