Medical And Travel Issues

For most parents, medical and attachment issues are the most significant and scary ones they face in preparation for adoption. Children can come with any diagnosis that a human being can have and there are never any guarantees on the health of a child. Children can arrive with undiagnosed health issues or develop problems after arrival. Most adults can remember being misdiagnosed by an American doctor or having inaccurate lab results. Medical practice has evolved to a much higher stage in America but there is still no magical computer that will be able to predict everything a person has or will develop. Immunizations sometimes fail and treatments do not work.

Medical diagnosis and treatments differ in each country. That is why we highly recommend the use of an International Adoption (IA) physician or clinic in assessing the “referral” information of your child. They have become familiar with the medical information that Chinese Toddleris provided from each country and can put it into context. You will have a much greater idea of the “risk factors” after your consultation with your IA doctor. Your IA doctor will not tell you whether you should adopt a given child; that is your decision. Each family has their own level of acceptance for differing medical concerns. A cleft palate for some families may be very concerning while another is unphased by the needed surgery.

We will be providing a brief description of some of the medical issues that have been more prevalent in internationally adoptable children. It is not all encompassing. The descriptions are based on a compilation of information. We not only encourage, but expect that you get more information on these issues. This is a lifelong decision you will be making and you need to be informed by those most knowledgeable. There are resources cited for you to use in doing your own research. Websites can give you immediate information. Be proactive; it will help you immensely when you are making decisions.

Packing For Travel

This section will vary depending on your destination and time of year. Veteran travelers have most of the basics down and some can pack very quickly. There are some things besides the “normal” packing that you may want to consider taking. Think of this as a “summer camp packing list” – suggestions for you to think about before you travel. Many of your destinations will have these items available to purchase in case you forget an item but you certainly don’t want to be caught without diaper rash medication for your infant – it could make for a very long flight. Check with your doctor before travel if you have any questions.

Pedialyte (or similar) can be used to help if your child has had diarrhea so he/she does not experience dehydration. If you don’t have it or don’t want to take liquid (weighs a lot and takes up room), you may choose to take baby instant rice cereal for this purpose. Make sure that the water you use is bottled or “safe.” Changes in water can cause problems.

Nipples - (buy in country if they use different ones than we use in US). For instance, your Russian baby may be used to a nipple that is bigger and has a larger hole for quicker feeding. If you present a small nipple with a small hole and he/she has to work very hard to get the same amount of formula, it may be difficult for both of you. Check during your first trip or prior to going for your baby. Bottles may differ as well.

Video and/or digital camera to document your first meeting with your child. This record will help you if you are communicating with your International Adoption doctor. You will be busy, tired and may not remember everything you may need to know when talking to your doctor about any issues or problems.
