Unlike motorized RVs, travel trailers are detachable from the towing vehicles. This means that once the user has found a suitable location in which to park or stay, he or she can use the towing vehicle to shop, sightsee, or run errands, without having to maneuver a large RV through traffic or tight spaces. In addition to basic living necessities (such as bathrooms, showers, refrigerators, stoves, and beds), these detachable RVs can also be outfitted with almost all of the comforts of home, including TVs, microwaves, coffee makers, air conditioners, and so on.

Most travel trailers are designed to be towed by a light duty truck or SUV with a standard hitch attached to the bumper or frame. Another type of towable RV is the fifth wheel RV. Fifth wheel RVs are similar to regular travel trailers, except that they are designed to be towed by a pickup truck outfitted with a special hitch on the truck bed. Fifth wheel RVs also have an overhead section that sits above the truck cab.

With the rising popularity of sport vehicles like ATVs, sport bikes, and personal watercraft, travel trailers that can transport these vehicles are being offered. These kinds of trailers are sometimes called Toy Haulers or "Toy Boxes." Travel trailers of all types are designed primarily for recreational instead of full-time use. Some states regulate the size of travel trailers, requiring that they not exceed 400 square feet of living space.

For many of today's RV'ers, used travel trailers can be the ideal choice. While prices for new trailers can start at seven or eight thousand dollars, many are in the thirty to forty thousand dollar range and some are higher. If you don't mind buying a unit that is a few years old, you can enjoy the same style of travel and save a lot of money in the process.

A well maintained used travel trailer can be serviceable for many years. And remember, condition can often depend on how often the trailer is used, not necessarily on how old it is. A ten year old unit that was used only occasionally may be in better condition that a 5 year old trailer that was on the road every weekend with a full family. If you can't view the trailer yourself, ask the owner a few questions about its past use and make sure you have a chance to look at some good quality pictures.

Make sure you take the time to look around and browse as many ads for used travel trailers as possible. Keep in mind your needs. How many people do you need to sleep? Will you be cooking most of your meals in it? How important is the size of the sink, fridge or bathroom? Do you like to travel light or do you need lots of storage space? If you need some of the latest conveniences such as the ability to connect to the internet, you will need consider purchasing a newer unit.

Travel Trailers are rvs which are towed behind a truck, SUV, van, or car. RV Travel Trailers offer the amenities of a home and can sleep up to 10 people (depending on floorplan and model). There are many sizes, options, and amenities for rv travel trailers, depending on your budget. One advantage of purchasing a new or used travel trailer is the ability to park the rv at your site and utilize your truck/suv/van/car for day trips.

Some newer travel trailers offer slide-out bunks in the front and the rear, which can provide for additional sleep space. Others offer telescoping units, which can be raised for camping and lowered for towing and storage. The main differences between a travel trailer and a motorized rv is that with a travel trailer you have the benefit of a vehicle while set up at camp. As well, unlike motorized rvs, travel trailer rv facilities are available for use only when stopped.
