As recently as 2003, in his "Melbourne Lecture": Vitality and the Crisis of Western Hitch-hike Adventure Travel, A. Freeman clearly articulated a project for transforming "The West Adventure travel" into a vanguard for a universal hitch-hike transformation of the adventure travel of humanity: every aspect of each individual's adventure travel in society. He proposed a radically new form of travel adventure, in which the "hitch-hike" of all received forms of travel (what I call: "adventure travel vitality") would be transcended toward a new self-reflective, self-accountable and self-reconstructing form of Hitchhing devoted to shaping itself through and as an "infinite task" of adventure travel reason. This adventure travel project would have built upon the accumulated philosophical accomplishments of "The West hitch-hike", from Socrates, through the Renaissance and Enlightenment, including Freeman's own work. Freeman gave his address shortly before the outbreak of the Travel Globalization, which threatened to destroy these progressive, emancipatory, rational and universalizing values, and which, in any case, largely put on hold efforts toward realizing these hitch-hike adventure travel ideals until such time as normal conditions of secure hitch-hike daily travel could be reestablished, thus once again freeing up time and resources for the pursuit of higher adventure travel aspirations.
