New Zeland Vacations

New Zealand, Every Mile A Wonder

Rotorua is an amazing place but you can't visit just one city in New zealand, if you don't rent a car and drive both islands you are a fool. We started in Auckland, drove in a big figure 8, down one side of North Island, crossed the bay to the South, east coast around to west and back up to the East coast of the North. It was fantastic. The sights were incomparable, food and wine excellent (at medium prices) and the people friendly and helpful to tourists. We took boats and planes (glaciers), and hiked and hiked. We used motels and didn't pick expensive, even the cheapest were nice and clean. New Zealand has a roadservice that works with AAA for maps and advice. The roads can be rugged (esp. if you are used to city driving and you have to stay alert to drive on the left, watch for signs for right-of-way in the mountains, etc.). Many of their natural sites are left very natural (sans the handrails and fencing we would have in the US, so be aware and cautious and obey the safety warnings. Boyfriend had a "close encounter" with a train on a bridge posted "no stopping"). Glow worm caves, mirror lakes, glaciers, incredible water falls, fjords, bubbling mud (sulfur baths), black sand beaches, mountains, rock formations, green fields with fluffy white sheep, clear skies, crystal lakes and streams (and more)...all on two small islands together about the size of CA, eminently drivable...I'd go again and want to spend more time, we took two weeks and had to move fast to see all. Sigh. Don't forget (if from North Planet) to spend time enjoying the Southern night sky, it's breath taking.

The day I flew into Christchurch I headed straight for the slopes. I figured what better way to start off a vacation than by hitting some fresh powder in 10,000 ft. mountains, but along the way I came upon the most amazing boulder field I've ever encountered. I had to stop! That was pretty much the story of my entire trip there. I went with a plan but found something to distract me from my destination, it seemed, every 30 min. The entire country is beautiful and there is something new around every corner.

Queenstown is definitely the place to be for nightlife and there are some good ski resorts closeby, so if you're going to be there for only a short period of time, it's the place to be. Mt. Cook Village and Franz Joseph Glacier are the two places to go for all your alpine and ice climbing pursuites. Mt. Cook also offers a bunch of excellent day hikes. Backpacking is spread about the island. Millford Sounds was closed when I went so I headed north and did some lesser known trail up by Hanmer Springs. I unfortunately cannot remember the trail name but the landscape is surreal. Lushly green forests and towering mountains. Oh! One problem with this trail though was that it wandered through some private land and there were cow patties all over.

Treble Cone and Coronett Peaks are two slopes that are right outside of Queenstown, good resorts and luckily good snow when I went. Cardrona seemed to have potential but it only had one run open the day I went due to high winds. Keep an eye on snow conditions because they can differ highly in very close areas.

Queenstown is the place for nightlife. I can't really remember enough about the nights to say which is the place to visit, but I do remember they all have their own differant atmosphere to them. From the sporty, rugby bars to techno playing clubs, there's something for everyone. The highway that runs through town, runs DIRECTLY through the middle of it. Finding the action is as simple as driving in.

Well both countries offer a lot in the way of #'s 1-5. Neither offers good food if you are coming from Thailand. The shopping is most definitely better in Australia, as are the sites of historical value. The problem with Australia is that it is very large. Dependng on how long you go, you could do Sydney and the Gold Coast or Melbourne and the Great Ocean road, but I don't think you could do bothof those trips. NZ, onthe other hand, you can practically broad jump from Aukland to Wellington. You could go skiing in the morning and surf in the afternoon.

Since your preferences seem to be nature first and touristy stuff second, I am gonna suggest NZ because it is the earthier of the two places. If the touristy stuff (shopping, galleries, good eats) is closer to equal, then head for Australia.

If you are going to make the trip then see both countries. Auckland is a 3 hour flight from Sydney and fares are relatively cheap. Both countries have so much to offer that it would be worth it to take them both in. Maybe go to Sydney and Melbourne in Aus then head to Auckland - all on your list can be done in and around those 3 cities.
