Both the development of Java by Sun Microsystems and the subsequent development of .NET by Microsoft have helped businesses because companies can now implement and deploy and web-enabled innovative services--many that open up legacy applications. Up until now businesses have made technology choices based on their deployment platform, (UNIX vs WINTEL) and development productivity (Java vs .NET ). This year's JavaOne will allegedly include an exhibition from Microsoft promoting Java. There is also an increasing possibility for greater cooperation and interoperability between the J2EE and .NET platforms. Microsoft has allowed developers to write .NET applications in any language where a CLS (Common Language Specification) has been implemented. Could it be possible that we might see C# running on Sun's Java Virtual Machine in the near future?

While chatting with Antoin O Lachtnain over lunch, we talked about how warranties are getting shorter. This could be happening because product manufacturers have lowered engineering standards to shave their costs. According to Art Kleiner, "the most solid empirical evidence on product quality involves warranty statistics .... Three veteran quality consultants told me that the number of warranty returns they see, particularly in the computer and electronics industries, is rising." Antoin noted how GM offers rebates or discounts instead of longer warranty periods. This creates the impression that manufacturers tolerate shoddy products.

Microsoft has a slimmed-down version of Windows named "Eiger". The new OS will allow users to breath new life into Pentium based systems. The minimum system requirements are allegedly 64MB RAM, Pentium class processor and 500 MB HD. As more and more applications become web applicationswe could be seeing the coming of the thin client. This is an important strategic move by Microsoft with both public service and private organisations evaluating the deployment of Linux distributions on existing hardware as a cost-effective upgrade path.
