Springtime in the Caribbean? Paris in the Fall? How about Italy next summer? It's a hard life being a Congressional spouse (or their Cheif of Staff's spouse), but someone has got to do it. Data courtesy of the Center for Public Integrity's "Power Trips" research project shows 23,000 privately funded trips from 01/00 to 06/05. Here are some favorite fact-finding hot spots where members took their spouses and family members (or staff and their respective spouses). A quick note: the data comes from self-reported travel disclosure forms, which acoording to CPI, aren't always complete.
No less than 79 lawmakers and staff took their spouses to Vegas during the studied time period. Lucky Rep. Darrell Issa went with his wife on four trips sponsored by the Consumers Electronics Association. The most expensive Sin City trips went to Rep. Harold Rogers and his wife. The trips, which lasted a couple of days, cost almost $8,000 in '00 and $9,400 in '01-- all paid for by the National Association of Broadcasters.
Members of Congress and staff took their family to the Carribean on 52 trips during that time period. Sen. Dick Lugar went with his wife twice, while Rep. Major Owens and spouse took a rather pricey 5-day trip for around $10,000 sponsored by the Aspen Institute. [SHIRA TOEPLITZ]
In the mood for something more romantic? Both Reps. Phil English and Jim Sensenbrenner took their wives to France twice out of 39 total privately-sponsored trips to France traveled by congress, staff and spouses. Reps. Ed Pastor, Bart Stupak and Jim McCrery took the most expensive trips -- week-long $19,000 voyages around France in '01 and '03 sponsored by the Nuclear Energy Institute in '01 and '03. Rep. George Miller and Sen. Paul Sarbanes took their spouses to Italy three times during that time period -- out of 80 total trips to that country by congress/their staff and spouses.
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the luckiest congressional spouse of them all? It's a tie between Mrs. Rep. David Obey and Mrs. Rep. George Miller. Both couples took six privately funded trips to Paris, Italy or the Carribean during the time period.

We are planning to get married next summer or fall, and we need to find a location for a destination wedding and also a honeymoon (not necessarily in the same location). We are currently living in Cairo, Egypt and our family and friends will be coming from the States, as well as Cairo and the UK. I was thinking either the Carribbean or Mexico (my fiance needs to have either surfing or kiteboarding there) also because the Carribean will not be far from the States. However, we have traveled to most spots in both, so we may want to go somewhere different for the honeymoon, like Fiji, Tahiti, South Africa, Australia.
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. Sandals Resorts would be my first suggestion to for your wedding and honeymoon. I will be glad to help you with prices, but first I would need to know when you plan to marry, and how long you would like to be gone.

Cairo Citadel

We got a "black and white" taxi from the Ramses Hilton to take us to the Citadel in Cairo. Ashrahim agreed to wait for us while we toured the Citadel for 1.5 hours. The Citadel is a very large walled medieval fortress that was built to defend the city for attacking crusaders. Inside the Citadel walls is the imposing Muhammad Ali mosque, which is huge and can bee seen from miles around. From the outside it seems that the mosque could have many, many levels of storeys, but when you go inside you realize that there is only one -- with a very very high domed ceiling, seems hundreds of feet high, I but I don't know for sure. As the Citadel is located ar the top of a hill, much of Cairo can been see from the edge of the Citadel walls. A group of Egyptian school girls asked to take a photo with us. We are not really sure why they wanted to, but apparently this is not uncommon. We then went down and met our cab driver.
