I read thefiner print and found out the ad was for United Airline’s new luxury travelclub called Ameniti. In attempts to increase business, United has introduced adiscount club that offers a barrage of perks for travelers, the most enticingbeing a 2-for-1 companion ticket. Members can take their spouse, or whom everthey wish, on a business trip with them for free. The deal is good for nationaland international flights, and can even be used on business and first classtickets. The best part is that members can take advantage of the 2-for-1tickets as much as they like.

United, Singapore Airlines and BMI flights — the first ticket must be a full-fare ticket. With Expedia, Travelocity and frequent flyermiles, it’s rare that customers ever to pay full price. This club would begreat for those travelers who like to turn a seemingly tedious business tripinto a family or couples vacation. Butfor the steep price of $295, the real value in the club lies in how much theperks are utilized. That’s something tokeep in mind before whipping out your credit card.

Managing Travel

There's a great article in the New York Times today about the future of corporate travel management. Because of online competition, the article explains, corporate travel managers are seeing their jobs threatened--or at least redefined. After one company brought in Expedia, the article says, the travel manager's responsibilities were so reduced that she took on a new role: that of corporate meeting planner.

The debate about the future of corporate travel management in light of online competition isn't necessarily new, but I was struck by the idea that travel managers may find themselves becoming full-fledged meeting planners. Does this happen frequently? And if so, what does it mean for the perception by higher ups of meeting planning as a profession?

Pre-paid Travel Cards May Not Be Worth It

CBS MarketWatch reports a new trend in plastic and it's called the pre-paid travel card. For a fee, you can load it up with an amount of money you think you will need on your trip. One of the big benefits is that the card is not linked to your bank account so if the card is stolen, the thief will not be able to access your bank account. But do travelers really need another piece of plastic to carry? With charge cards like MasterCard and VISA promising to cover any charge made to your card that you did not authorize combined with the $8 to $15 upfront costs and "reloading" fees for the traveler card, they may not be the best deal. However, if you are trying to control your child's spending while they are traveling then these cards may be the savior you are searching for.

Smart Money reports the International Air Transport Association says global air traffic has seen a 20.3 percent increase for the first half of 2004, up from the same period last year. Cargo traffic rose 13 percent. Ominously, the biggest increases came from the Middle Eastern carriers who saw a 44.3 percent rise. IATA Chief Giovanni Bisignani predicts the year will end with double digit growth.

The cruises offer a chance for Pagans to get together, see the worldly sites, swap spells ans see if the can get the cruise ship to turn purely by willing it to do so. Press release reports.
